The Californication of Pulp Fiction
" I smelled Los Angeles before I got to it," he says. "It smelled stale and old like a living room that had been closed too long. But the colored lights fooled you. The Lights were wonderful. There ought to be a monument to the man who invented neon lights." - Leland, 99. Los Angeles is a place of deception, a place of glamor, and corruption. Writer's thrived off of this setting. It is a place were dreams come true, but most fall short, and end up destroying any bit on integrity they had in their body. Writer's found that people ended up becoming the city and did anything and everything to try to get to the top, but usually never succeeded. " Pulp found its fertile crescent in California... the writers were far from home, often scorched by their experience in the war, and driven to the edge of the continent in search of something." "Playing against the popular image of California as a land of sunshine and opportunity, pulp writers recast the state as a dark, violent place where the outcast, drifters, and grifters dug in after they ran out of room to run." - Leland, 97

Your personal ethos
This is what you shall do: live independently and live for yourself, don't let anyone tell you who you are and what you know. Know what you feel and explore new options. Be true to your thoughts, but realize that yours are not the only ones. Go about your business knowing that it is yours and only yours, cherish that, and don't get involved in others, for it is not your own. Realize god made this day for you to enjoy it and make it whatever you want. Don't waste a single minute of your precious time, because no know promised you tomorrow, and if they did, tell them to walk into the ER and preach that to a ten year old girl and her family that just lost their father to a drunk driver who walked away from the scene with only a few scratches. Love those that are close to you, and remind yourself why they are. These people are there for you in good times and bad, and that's what separates the people who love you from the people that use you. Value your family and respect their opinions, they are only giving them out to help you. As easy as it may be to feel hate and anger, have no scorn towards a single soul. Let go of your baggage, feel liberated, and live life. To scorn will only cast a dark shadow upon your life and bring misery. Always question people's thought and ideas, not to impose judgment, but to gain understanding and clarification. Feel free to question love when looking for significance in others. You need to watch out for you first, you cannot give love without knowing what it is. Act how you want, drink something bitter, breathe in something deep.
